Why does the job exist?
The purpose of this position is to provide ad valorem appraisal training and consulting to county assessors, ensure assessors adhere to the New Mexico Property Tax Code, provide appraisal and appraisal review services to governmental agencies, provide technical assistance to assessors and conduct and monitor valuation protest hearings. In addition, technical assistance to the county assessors will be provided along with performing annual county assessor position will also assist in training and mentoring other Real Estate Appraiser staff and being available for special projects.
How does it get done?
This position will be responsible for:
- Participating in appraisals of residential, commercial, special use buildings, industrial and agricultural properties
- Valuing lessor and lessee interest in property
- Providing assessors and their staff technical assistance in conducting mass appraisals
- Training county assessors and their staff in appraisal and assessment procedures
- Solving difficult problems of appraisal
- Collecting and analyzing economic data affecting property values
- Reviewing and evaluating appraisal reports
- Communicating with management and assist office staff as needed
- Assist management in training and mentoring other bureau staff in appraisal practices
- Travel to all 33 county assessor offices statewide as necessary

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's Degree in Business or Public Administration and one (1) year of experience in real estate, appraisals, real estate appraisals, accounting, auditing, finance, and/or collections. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling five (5) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Must be current with all tax reporting/payment. Employment is subject to post offer pre-employment criminal background check to include fingerprint checks and is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
The work will require travel with possible overnight stay throughout the is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
