What you will do:
As a Property Appraiser, you’ll play a key role in valuing real property within your assigned area (and across the state when needed). You’ll work closely with local government officials and colleagues to apply state property tax laws accurately and fairly.
Primary job duties include:
- Appraising and assessing typical real property, including conducting field reviews to estimate fair market value of manufacturing facilities through inspections and research.
- Monitoring fee-in-lieu of tax accounts and preparing documentation related to appeal requests
- Maintaining taxpayer data, assisting with preparing appraisals, interpreting and analyzing system data to make updates and adjustments to taxpayer returns and files using multiple computer systems. Systems include, DORWAY, Commercial Estimator, and APEX Sketch
- Communicating clearly with taxpayers, representatives, and government personnel to explain property tax laws and regulations while protecting the confidentiality of taxpayer information.
- Assisting local government personnel and officials with issues and questions related to property tax administration through research and interpretation of property tax laws
- Completing all continuing education and training required by SCDOR, SC Appraiser’s Board, and the agency
Minimum and Additional Requirements
Either:
- A bachelor’s degree with experience in real estate appraisal OR
- An appraisal designation may be substituted for the real estate appraisal experience
Additional Requirement:
- A valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation are required for field work. (Mileage reimbursement provided)
- In order to complete training and education, some overnight travel may be required
- Must be capable of lifting and moving items up to 15 lbs.
- Employee may be required to sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time
- Must be able to wear person protective equipment (PPE) at required worksites
Academic degrees must be from an accredited institution of higher learning.
Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of appraisal principles and techniques
- Knowledge of SC Tax Laws and regulations
- Ability to understand and utilize computer applications in the appraisal process
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers
- Ability to communicate effectively

- Hours: Flexible hours may be available from 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Monday – Friday (37.5 hours per week).
- Telework schedule: This position may be eligible to work remotely up to two days per week.
