Job Description
Job Overview
The Field Appraiser I is responsible for gathering and recording data about real property to assist in building the real property file. Uses judgement to classify and code structures and land based on statutory requirements. Follows prescribed policies and procedures. Works under general supervision.
Responsibilities
- Collect and data enter property data from the field.
- Conduct informal appeals.
- Final valuation of real estate values.
- All other duties as assigned by the County Appraiser.
Position Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Must be able to complete and pass the following courses within two years of employment: Orion Introduction and Overview of Basic Functionality, Residential / Ag Data Collection, Kansas Property Tax Law and International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO) Course 101 Fundamentals of Real Property Appraisal.
- Must be highly motivated.
- Must be able to safely navigate construction sites and uneven terrain.
Knowledge:
- Computer software programs and applications such as MS Office.
- County and/or city government administration.
- Mathematics, geometry, account and/or statistical principles
- Building and agricultural practices
Skills:
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to interact in a positive and professional manner to develop and maintain strong working relationships with co-workers, management, and general public.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to prioritize.
- Understand and perform formula driven calculations.
- Understand real property terms and uses.
Abilities:
- Ability to read, understand and follow maps with aerial photographic background.
- Ability to work and contribute to a team environment.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and meet deadlines.
- Ability to operate computer programs/software/platforms, to include those used by the county to perform job duties.
- Ability to use basic office equipment.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to navigate construction sites and uneven terrain in varying weather conditions.

- Indoors – Frequently. Usually well lit, heated and/or air-conditioned indoor office setting with adequate ventilation.
- Outdoors - Frequently
