Kleberg County Appraisal District

Title: Appraiser

The Kleberg County Appraisal District is accepting applications for an Appraiser position. This position performs field and office work related to the appraisal of real property within Kleberg County. Duties include data collection, property inspections, market analysis, and the application of generally accepted appraisal techniques to develop accurate and equitable property values.

The Appraiser works under the direction of the Chief Appraiser or department manager and must perform all duties in accordance with the Texas Property Tax Code, USPAP, and District policies.

Responsibilities:

  • Inspect, measure, photograph, and document real property improvements and land.
  • Collect and analyze market data to support accurate valuations.
  • Read and interpret plats, maps, deeds, and building permits.
  • Update and maintain appraisal records as needed.
  • Prepare reports and data summaries to support value conclusions.
  • Communicate professionally with taxpayers, co‑workers, and management.
  • Assist with Appraisal Review Board (ARB) hearings by explaining and defending assigned values.
  • Provide customer service and respond to taxpayer inquiries.
  • Pursue and obtain the Registered Professional Appraiser (RPA) designation within five (5) years, if not already certified.
  • Comply with District policies and maintain high standards of ethics, integrity, and confidentiality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma required.
  • College coursework or a degree in real estate, appraisal, business, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience in an appraisal district, tax office, real estate, construction, or fee appraisal is desirable.
  • RPA designation preferred but not required at time of hire.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, deeds, and sales documents.
  • Understanding of the cost, market, and income approaches to value.
  • Proficiency with computers, including mass appraisal software, Mapping software, Microsoft Excel, and Word.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and handle stressful situations professionally.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred but not required.

Physical & Environmental Requirements:

  • Ability to walk, bend, climb stairs, and navigate uneven terrain during field inspections.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid Texas driver’s license.
  • Must be willing to work overtime as needed to meet statutory deadlines.

Compensation & Benefits:

Salary is based on experience and will be discussed during interviews. We offer 100% employer-paid insurance, with additional self-paid options for health, dental, vision, and more.
